Goa Trance and Punk Rock are, to me, inextricably linked. Both birthed and nurtured by the underground, the passing of tapes and home recordings, a subversion of the system and desire for all people to be treated and experience life as equals. Regardless of gender, race, or age, everyone deserves autonomy and respect. The system of oppression built to bind us and make us fight with each other instead of attacking the root cause of the trauma and inequity.

In 1993 I started at a new high school and was alone. I met a person who then became my friend on the school bus during a field trip because we both liked the Descendents. A couple of years later, around 1995, that friend went to a party and heard Goa Trance and tipped me to it. After being hooked, I started along the journey of learning to DJ and collecting records. I was playing various little house parties as high school finished up and began testing a few different monikers for gigs.

In 1998, the spring after I had graduated high school, I went on a road trip with a few mates to visit another friend who was attending university across the country. During that road trip, one of my punk rock friends was teasing me for listening to electronic music. I said I listened to Goa and he commented “Goa? Like the goa constrictor?” and poof, a moniker and alternate identity was birthed.

That name has stuck ever since and that identity and association between Goa and Punk has never stopped existing. The world, and myself, have been on quite the journey these past few years and it was time to remember what goa trance and punk rock was all about. We can change the system and we can make the world a better place. We don’t do the right thing because of the law; we often have to do the right thing in spite of the law.

Goa is the way of life and I’m a punk rocker.
